Computer Science Accreditation Council (CSAC) moves to an outcome based accreditation approach

The CIPS Computer Science Accreditation Council (CSAC) undergraduate program accreditation policies and procedures historically have been intended for programs that prepare graduates for entry into a profession appropriate to the program's discipline. In specifying its criteria for achieving accreditation in a computing discipline, the Council aims to establish a relationship between a) defining minimum standards or objectives, b) focusing on achievement of graduate attributes instead of being overly prescriptive, and c) encompassing flexibility within which students can set individual goals and tailor their programs. To more closely align with these objectives, CSAC has now fully moved to an outcome based accreditation approach.

Centennial College becomes first college in Canada to receive joint CIPS and CCTT Accreditation

Centennial_College     Cips Logo     CCTT

CIPS and the Canadian Council of Technicians and Technologists (CCTT) are pleased to announce the first successful joint accreditation of a number of computing programs at Centennial College in Toronto.

The accreditation followed the signing of a Letter of Intent earlier this year in which both organizations agreed to partner in the following areas:

  • Joint accreditation of computing and Information Technology (IT) type programs at educational institutions;
  • The ever-greening of the accreditation criteria;
  • Exchange of information on accreditation rules and practices; and
  • Promotion of joint accreditation to educational institutions and the public-at-large.

"The joint accreditation enables the separate organizations to present a unified and consistent approach to stakeholders, by providing a collaborative accreditation platform for computing and information technology programs", said Isidore Leblond, Executive Director, CCTT.

New ITCP Application Route:

IP3P Mutual Acceptance Route

ITCP logoThe CIPS Information Technology Certified Professional (ITCP) has been accredited by the International Professional Practice Partnership (IP3) under the IP3P standard. The IP3 has endorsed the Principles of Mutual Acceptance for IP3P accredited societies. The IP3P Mutual Acceptance establishes a framework for comparison of different professional certification programs that lead to a common understanding between different countries and will facilitate portability of professional membership.

CIPS and the Australian Computer Society (ACS - http://www.acs.org.au/), which are both IP3P accredited, will recognize each others' professional certifications. For a full list of IP3P accredited societies see: http://www.ipthree.org/about-ip3/accredited-societies.

Information on the Mutual Acceptance Route is available at:  http://www.cips.ca/ITCPMutualAcceptanceRoute

For more information on the ITCP or the Mutual Acceptance Route contact Gina van Dalen at gina@cips.ca or 905 602 1370 ext.2329

ABEEK and KIISE visits CIPS National Office
to explore the ITCP

ABEEK and KIISE visits CIPSA delegation from the Accreditation Board for Engineering Accreditation of Korea (ABEEK), the signatory to the Seoul Accord, and the Korean Institute of Information Scientists and Engineers (KIISE), the professional society in Korea for computing professionals, visited the CIPS headquarters on August 8 to explore the CIPS professional standards program.

ABEEK and KIISE have formed an alliance to explore the creation of a professional certification program, and are in the process of joining IP3 (www.ipthree.org) with an intent to eventually seek IP3 accreditation. As one of the first organization to receive IP3 accreditation, the CIPS ITCP standard has become a global benchmark that not only will be used by ABEEK/KIISE to shape its certification program, but now is also used by the New Zealand Computer Society (http://www.itcp.org.nz/about).

Dr. Sung Jo Kim (Vice President of ABEEK) and Dr. Dong Yoon Kim, representing KIISE, spent the day with Gina van Dalen, CIPS Manager Professional Standards, exploring the CIPS certification program and its evolution, the IP3 Accreditation and possible areas for collaboration.

Ruth Morton - MicrosoftHi, I'm Ruth Morton, Technical Advisor at Microsoft Canada.

I recently asked folks on Linkedin what desktop operating systems their companies were using and was surprised to find out that many organizations were still standardizing on Windows XP SP3. But then again, I shouldn't have been so surprised - I've been a part of many desktop deployment projects and it's not for the faint of heart. There's a large upfront investment of time, money and resources and it's a project that needs to be managed well. And let's face it - IT does not have the greatest reputation for delivering complex projects well.
